Relate North Essex & East Herts

Violence is Preventable (VIP) is a multi award winning abuse prevention and disclosure programme established 13 years ago for children and young people, developed by the Scottish charity, Eighteen and Under. http://www.18u.org.uk

Relate North Essex and East Herts have been working in partnership with Eighteen and Under to bring the programme to Essex and surrounding areas. VIP is an accredited programme.
Relate is currently the only organisation other than Eighteen and Under to have an accredited Programme Leader.

The VIP project works on 3 levels:

-  Early disclosures

-  Staying safe – avoiding violent or abusive situations and

-  Prevention – changing the mindset of potential abusers of the future

VIP focuses on young people from 4 – 16 years old, through a holistic teaching approach which regards violence as a major health issue. VIP promotes respecting one’s self and other people and explains why ‘no one has the right to hurt you’. The project explores all aspects of violence from playground rough and tumble with primary school children, to the complexities of being safe and avoiding violence with older students. We believe that this programme is a unique and creative way to reach children of all ages and prevent the use of violent and abusive behaviour in the future.

VIP introduces simple personal safety messages. The VIP resources encourage children to explore their feelings and identify what 'being safe' means to them. VIP teaches children how to say 'No' or go and tell if they feel upset or hurt.

We take a whole school approach and work with all ages and all classes. We spend approximately 1 hour (less for the younger students) with each class, once a week for six weeks.
