Relationship & Family Counselling

Whatever the stresses and strains on your relationship, counselling can offer a way forward. Relate counsellors work with almost 100,000 couples and individuals per year.

Counsellors don't judge but they do listen, and they can help you make a difference to your relationship.

Relate counselling is available to all - you don't have to be married or  living together to take advantage of our confidential service.

Perhaps a relationship has ended and you are aware of repeating problems and issues, perhaps you are starting a new relationship and want to explore it's boundaries. Maybe your relationship feels stale and boring, why not explore some changes that could bring back the intimacy and fun in your life.

It is amazing how talking and listening can help you and your partner understand yourselves and each other better, then you can go on to addressing your own and each other's needs without resentment or conditions. What do you have to lose by not doing it?

:: Frequently Asked Questions ::

What is "Family Counselling?"

Family Counselling focuses on the way people live their lives together. The service can help: parents and children who struggle to communicate effectively; parents with different parenting ideas that cause friction within the family; children and young people struggling with sibling relationships; blended or “step” families who are bringing different experiences and expectations to a newly formed family. Families where domestic violence or other abuse has occurred, families where caring for a disabled or elderly relative is a feature and families where crisis or stress (possibly due to having very young parents, single parents or financial difficulties for example) is an issue would also directly benefit.

What will happen when I come for counselling?

Your counsellor will help you to identify what your major concerns are within your relationship. They will help you explore your feelings, attitudes and expectations and to try and look at your relationship from new perspectives. Your counsellor will not tell you what to do, nor will they take sides or encourage you to stay in a relationship at all costs. Our aim is to equip you and your partner with the skills to move your relationship forward.

Do I have to pay for Counselling?

Yes, there is a charge for counselling and we ask you to pay what you can afford according to your income and situation. Each session costs Relate over £50 to provide and we ask you to take this into account when you decide how much you can afford. Your can download our leaflet with prices from our home page.

My Partner won't come, can I come to counselling alone?

Relationship counselling can be very effective when both parners are involved. However many people do attend alone and achieve positive long lasting benefits from the counselling work done. After a separation counselling can be very effective in helping you identify your own needs for future relationships.

Will we be forced to patch things up?

No, staying together is not always the best option. Sometimes relationships do come to an end and your counsellor will be able to help you to keep the line of communication open through your break up. It is just as important to face separation as it is to try to work things out so that you feel you have covered all perspectives.
