Confidentiality
Discussions you have with your Relate counsellor are confidential to Relate personnel. For example, all counsellors receive ongoing support from their supervisor who will be aware of the important issues that have been discussed in order to ensure that your counsellor can best assist you. This information remains private and confidential and is only shared in this way to ensure we do all we can to support you.
However, if during the course of counselling or consultation we believe that you or someone else, particularly a child, may be at risk of harm we have a legal and moral obligation to disclose this to the relevant statutory agency in order to protect those in danger. Where possible and safe to do so, we will seek to discuss this with you first.
Please discuss this with our team if you need further clarification.
We also work sensitively within National Child Protection Procedures
Child Protection Policy
The welfare of all children is a paramount concern.
Relate North Essex and East Herts is governed by the Children Act and the procedures contained in the local inter-disciplinary guidelines for Child Protection (the Blue Book) issued by the Area Child Protection Committee (ACPC).
Relate will disclose to the appropriate authority, Essex Social Services Department and/or Essex Police, any information that suggests that a child may be at risk of suffering significant harm.
The duty of Relate under the Children Act takes precedence over client confidentiality.
Our full Child Protection policy is available upon request.
