Frequently Asked Questions on Relationship Counselling

How does it work?

When you telephone, call in or email us to make an appointment a member of our Reception Team will take your contact details, talk about our payments policy and answer any questions you may have.

A Consultation will be offered to you as soon as possible. When you attend these sessions you will talk to the counsellor about your relationship and why you want counselling. Part of this process is to ensure that our service is the most appropriate one for you or whether another agency may suit you better. If you come with your partner you will be seen together and separately before deciding if counselling is best for you.

If you decide that counselling is the right course, this can continue the next week without waiting any longer.

What happens during counselling?

Your counsellor will help you identify what your major concerns are within your relationship, explore your feelings, attitudes and expectations. Your counsellor will not tell you what to do, nor will they take sides or encourage you to stay in a relationship at all costs. Our aim is to equip you and your partner with the skills to move your relationship forward.

How long will it take?

Sessions are usually weekly and last for up to an hour for as many sessions as you and the counsellor agree. The average is 4-6.

Who goes to Relate?

We see people individually, as couples or in family groups. People who come for relationship counselling can be single, a couple, part of a same sex relationship, young or old. Relate's services are available to anyone who has a relationship issue.

Is there a charge?

We operate a scale of charges based on income to ensure the service is accessible to all.  You may qualify for free or subsidised counselling if you are in the Army RAF or Fords.

How do I pay?

We accept card payments, cheques and cash. Card payments can be made over the phone.

What if I have to cancel?

Sometimes there is no choice but to cancel an appointment and it helps us if you can give us as much notice as possible.

Domestic violence and abuse: what are Relate's views?

Violence and abuse is an issue for many people who come to us for help with their relationship. We know from our experience that in this situation, working with both partners together may not be safe. If this is so, we would help each partner to get individual specialist support from Relate or from another agency.
